Economic experiments with farmers regarding water sharing

Atcha economic field experiments regarding water sharing were organized in July 2018 in three different villages of the State of Karnataka. 24 farmers have attended each session, and 7 other sessions are planned in the next months.

The economic field experiments were organized by researchers from the Toulouse School of Economics (Dr. A. Reynaud, Dr. B. Ouvrard) and from the University of Agricultural Sciences UAS Bangalore (Pr. M. Shivamurthy).

The experiments included a game in which farmers had to decide upon the quantity of water they wanted to use for themselves, and the quantity of water they were ready to let for a farmer located downstream. Such a simple setting will allow researchers to assess the level of altruism of Indian farmers in a context of water sharing. The results of this economic field experiments will constitute the basis for a scientific article which is expected to be submitted to an academic journal and to be presented during an Atcha workshop.
